Malegapuru Makgoba has just written a new book called Leadership for transformation since the dawn of South Africa’s democracy: An insider's view.

In this interview, he tells Freek Robinson that he came back to South Africa to help with the transformation of our society. Yet, 30 years later, we have not achieved a new dawn; instead, we are at a new darkness.

Robinson questions Makgoba on his childhood, his medical degree, his PhD at Oxford, returning to the country, arguing with Thabo Mbeki about HIV/AIDS and finding himself chairperson of Eskom.

Makgoba then tells Robinson why De Ruyter was the right person to lead Eskom, and he names the ministers who play political games with Eskom instead of supporting those who understand what needs to be done.
