Diary of a madman
By Nikolai Gogol

Performed by Jeroen Kranenburg

Nikolai Gogol’s Diary of a Madman, performed by Jeroen Kranenburg, opens at the Intimate Theatre on Tuesday, 27 November at 8 pm for a very short season.

Diary of a Madman is an amazing performance, a work that manages to be simultaneously Gogol’s most touching tragedy and his funniest comedy. This tale is told by a madman and a dog and contains some of Gogol’s most believable and real human beings, including the dogs.
Jeroen Kranenburg studied for Performers Diploma at UCT 1975-78 and after a season with PACT Playwork emigrated to the Netherlands and stayed till 1995.  During that period he worked with various companies throughout the continent, i.e. Sheer Madness Fools Theatre, Berlin Play Actors and several one-man shows including Diary of a Madman which premiered in Amsterdam in 1992.  In ’95 he returned to Cape Town and has been active on several stages including Artscape: (Buckingham Palace/District Six, Hamlet, Autodidact, Witnesses, As You Like It, Taming of the Shrew,) Baxter Theatre: (Dancing at Lughnasa, Amadeus, Twaalfde Nag), The Mechanicals: (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear), The Fugard: (Statements after an Arrest under the Immorality Act) amongst others. Kranenburg has been nominated for best supporting actor this year for After Cardenio.
Diary of a Madman forms part of a six-part series of theatrical portraits, including Dostoyevsky’s Notes from Underground, Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons, Chekov’s The Boring Man, Tolstoy’s A Confession and Maxim Gorky’s Life of a Useless Man.
Jeroen’s other one man shows include; Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes (Oscar Wilde) and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde which he has performed throughout Cape Town from the Mount Nelson to Valkenberg.
