Competitors selected for Unisa international flute and clarinet competition

The first stage of the First Unisa International Flute and Clarinet Competition has taken place and 27 competitors have accepted the invitation to participate in the event from 2 to 15 February 2014.

Sixty-three young flautists and clarinettists from 20 countries on five continents applied with a video recording of their performances as required for the Qualifying Round of this prestigious event. Three South Africans are among them.

The screening panel consisted of Karendra Devroop, Deputy Director of the Unisa Music Foundation; Arisa Voges, Director of the Directorate Music at Unisa; flautist Sabine Baird from the KZN Philharmonic; clarinettist Jimmy Reinders from Cape Town and the Pretoria flautist Handri Loots.

The competitors are Damien Bachman (clarinet, Switzerland), Elena Badaeva (flute, Russia), Barbara Borowicz (clarinet, Poland), Nathanaël Carré (flute, France), André Cebrián Garea (flute, Spain), Raoul Cho (flute, Republic of Korea), Kathrin Christians (flute, Germany), Matvey Demin (flute, Russia), Sergey Eletskiy (clarinet, Russia), Woong-Ji Hwang (flute, Republic of Korea), Sangyoon Kim (clarinet, Republic of Korea), Georgiy Mansurov (clarinet, Russia), Mikhail Mering (clarinet, Russia), Angelo Monanaro (clarinet, Italy), Alexey Morozov (flute, Russia), Albert Pae (flute, USA), Tomasz Sowa (clarinet, Poland), Lilja Steininger (flute, Germany), Xue Su (flute, China), Anna Svejdova (flute, Czech Republic), Valentin Uryupin (clarinet, Russia), Aliya Vodovozova (flute, Russia), Weixiong Wang (clarinet, China) and Roberta Zorino (flute, Italy).

The other competitors are three South African musicians, flautists Cobus du Toit and Myles Roberts as well as clarinettist Justin Carter who have already qualified for the event during the First Unisa Southern African Wind Instrument Competition.

The competition will take place in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus.

The total prizes are worth more than R890 000.
