An Australian father who regularly drank and played poker while his twin toddlers were starving to death in their bedroom has been sentenced to eight years' jail for manslaughter.
The 33-year-old man, who cannot be named, stood stony-faced in the dock of the Supreme Court in Brisbane as he was sentenced on Monday.
After the relationship breakdown, the mother began to suffer from mental illness and stopped feeding the twins solids, causing them to slowly starve to death in their bedroom over two months, the court heard.
Prosecutor Michael Byrne argued that unlike the the mentally ill mother, the father had shown gross indifference to the duty of care he owed to the twins.
The defence also argued the father had never shown any criminal intent.
But Justice Lyons said the father's conduct had failed to provide the twins with "food, nourishment and the other necessities of life" and he had shown only partial remorse for his role in their deaths.
"You did not see them at all in the period of the last month of their lives, yet you passed the door of their bedroom several times daily," he added.
The father will be eligible for parole in 2017.
Last month, the mother was sentenced to eight years' prison, but she was eligible for immediate parole as she had already served over five years.
