An Auckland teenager who punched a baby several times, causing her blindness in one eye and probable brain damage, has been jailed for more than three years.
Polash Kabhir, who was 16 at the time of offending, was in a relationship with the 19-week-old baby's mother and living with them in the suburb of Mt Wellington.
On the night of October 20, 2010, the baby woke up and began crying.
Kabhir got out of bed and punched her in the head before going back to his room.
When the victim continued to cry, he got up again and punched her twice in the head then covered her nose and mouth with his hands for about a minute.
The violent onslaught continued with Kabhir punching her again and shaking her violently before throwing her back into the cot.
The baby was taken to Starship Hospital where tests showed she had bleeding in all layers of her right eye, causing permanent blindness.
Scans showed brain bleeding on both sides of her skull and there was a "7 centimetre fracture which was splayed and widened", a summary of facts stated.
"Because of the extensive neurological damage it's very likely that she will have residual brain damage, including cognitive and behavioural problems."
Kabhir later told police he had shaken the baby because he had been "really angry".
He pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard and one of dissuading a witness from giving evidence.
In text messages sent to the victim's mother, Kabhir threatened her new partner and offered her $65,000 to give evidence that someone else was responsible for the violence.
"Plz be strong, don't be scared. You do this $65000 is yours. That's enough to cover all your bills," he texted.
In the High Court in Auckland this morning, Justice John Priestley jailed Kabhir for three years three months, after giving him credit for his youth and previous clean police record.

MAAR die liewe regter in NZ is so beïndruk met die fokken vent dat hy 'n ligte rapsie kry van 3 jaar, seker uit in een jaar?
Nou wonder mens of die feit dat die knaap baie gewillig is om geld mildelik uit te deel nie hier iewers 'n groot rol gespeel het in sy patetiese straf nie??
En ja!!
Ek sê dit prontuit, die mense van NZ is korrup, dus verbaas hierdie soort van strawwe geensins nie.
Feit is dat 'n baba is die mees weerloosste lid van ons samelewing en moet die beste beskerm word, en die HEEL swaarste strawwe moet uitgedeel word aan diegene wat 'n baba so wreedaardig aangeval en aanhou aanval het, nie net 'n tikkie op die vingers nie.
Strawwe behoort VEEL erger te wees as bv vir verkragting, want 'n volwasse vrou kan haarself verdedig op talle maniere maar 'n baba is weerloos.
En die moeder selwers moet agter die tralies loop kuier saam met die moerder.
Dank Got, die soort van gespuis slaan ons sommer selwers vrek hier in SA ... maar hei, NZ is die Afrikaner-paradys, moenie laat ek julle afsit nie ... stoom voort soontoe ... robbies trek robbies aan ...
