Desperate rebuild workers struggling to break into the Christchurch market are being blamed for stealing diggers, trucks and other high-value equipment to take advantage of a construction industry "feeding frenzy".
In the last fortnight, five vehicles and a mountain of tools worth more than $300,000 have been stolen from yards and building sites across the city.
Police believe there may be many more thefts not reported.
They say desperate contractors may be stealing heavy machinery then repainting, refitting and reusing it for their own gain.
Industry insiders say there is a "feeding frenzy" for contracts in the city and virtually no second-hand equipment available. Companies on the fringes are struggling to stay afloat and could be stealing rather than buying equipment new.
Yesterday, police arrested a 27-year-old man found asleep behind the wheel of a $150,000 truck taken from a building site in Logistics Dr, Harewood overnight on Tuesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Corrie Parnell said the catch was rare and highlighted a "real concern" about theft within the construction industry.
In the past fortnight, three trucks, an excavator, a forklift and other expensive equipment have been stolen in five separate incidents.
"Given the high demand for heavy contracting machinery in Christchurch . . . it's highly likely vehicles such as these are being quickly repainted and refitted or ‘rebirthed' and moved back into the local market," Parnell said.
"What we've created in Christchurch is a feeding frenzy. People believe there's a lot of money to be made and the problem is the work isn't coming in as fast as people believe it could be," the contractor said.
On Monday thieves used bolt cutters to open the gates at CablePrice, Hornby, and steal an excavator on a trailer.

James Dale Davidson's $1.6 million mansion on the Wharekauhau Lodge estate will be sold in a mortgagee sale after he stopped paying his bank, despite having funds in the United States.
But he believed New Zealand was also to blame, with its hostility towards rich foreigners making it a terrible investment prospect.
