Beethoven's Spring Sonata will cheer winter hearts

Gramophone award winning violinist Ilya Gringolts and pianist Peter Laul will perform on Sunday 1 June at 16:00 in the Enoch Sontonga Hall at Unisa.

The Sonata no 2 for violin and piano by Edvard Grieg will open the programme, followed by the Sonata no 2 by the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.

The popular “Spring” Sonata by Beethoven will conclude the programme.

Ilya started his music education in St Petersburg and finished it at the Juilliard School in New York. He won the International Violin Competition “Premio Paganini” in 1998.

Ilya’s recent and future orchestral highlights include the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, a tour of Germany and Spain with NDR Orchester Hannover, a tour of Japan with the NHK Orchestra, Halle, Liverpool and Birmingham Symphony Orchestras, Deutsches Sinfonie Orchester Berlin with Sir Roger Norrington as conductor, BBC Scottish Symphony, Sao Paulo Orchestra with de Burgos on the podium, Israel Philharmonic, Boston Haydn & Handel Society, Royal Scottish National and Basel Symphony Orchestras, Orquesta de Barcelona y Nacional de Catalunya.

In recital, Ilya recently presented the complete cycle of Bach sonatas with Masaaki Suzuki at the prestigious Verbier Festival.

Recent and future recitals and festival appearances include the Lucerne, Kuhmo, Risor, Zermatt and Verbier Festivals, BBC Proms, the Wigmore Hall, Basel AMG Solistenabende, Festival Printemps des Arts Monte Carlo, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Colmar Festival, Milan Serate Musicali, and the Enescu Festival, Bucharest. 

Ilya has recorded several CDs and won a Gramophone Award for his Taneyev Chamber Music CD with Pletnev, Repin, Imai and Harrell.

Peter Laul was born and educated in St Petersburg. He has performed extensively all over Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. He regularly collaborates with Ilya Gringolts.

Tickets are sold at the door for R95 (adults) and R75 (students and pensioners).
