A concert dedicated to the Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz will take place in the ZK Matthews Great Hall at Unisa on Sunday 1 September at 16:00.
The artists will include vocal ensemble Fons Partita accompanied with a basso continuo section consisting of Stephanie Gurga (Baroque organ) and Berthine van Schoor (cello).
Fons Partita consists mainly of current and former students of renowned singer Werner Nel. They made their debut performing the Mass in G minor by J S Bach with the L’Orfeo baroque orchestra from Austria in September 2012 at Unisa.
The ensemble specialises in Early Music, performing to the tenets of historically informed performance practice.
This concert will be directed by the German tenor and conductor Florian Cramer, who has worked with choirs such as the Camerata Vocale Freiburg and the Rheinische Kantorei.
Since 2003, he has been conducting the Evangelische Studentenkantorei Freiburg, and since 2010, Florian Cramer was appointed artistic director of the New Basel Chamber Choir as successor to Martin Schmidt.
He teaches singing at the Musikhochschule Freiburg and courses at centres such as the Staufener Musikwoche and the Church Music Educational Centre Schlüchtern. He also gives master classes in Letland.
Heinrich Schütz is widely regarded as the most important German composer before J S Bach.
The programme consists of the first German Requiem, Musikalische Exequien and a number of shorter works such as Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes from the Geistliche Chormusik.
Tickets for the concert are sold only at the door at R90 for adults and R70 for students and pensioners.
