Baroque music in lunch hour concert

  • 0

A lunch hour concert featuring music from the 17th and 18th centuries is taking place on Friday, 29 June at  13:00 in the Dr Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at Unisa.

The concert will feature the precious Booth harpsichord at Unisa, played by baroque specialist John Coulter.

The harpsichord used in this lunch hour concert was built by Colin Booth and is based on a mid 18th century German style instrument by Fleischer. One is able to perform a wide range of musical literature on such an instrument. The German harpsichord building tradition owes much to the Italian and Flemish traditions.

The well-known Mr. Coulter, based at te University of the Free State,  has compiled a varied programme, combining solo harpsichord pieces with works for voice or recorder.

The programme includes works by J S Bach (who owned 14 harpsichords when he died), French composer François Couperin, English composers John Blow and Henry Purcell and Italian Alessandro Scarlatti (the father of the famous harpsichord sonata composer , Domenico Scarlatti).

Mr. Coulter will be joined by tenor Paul Bester and Olivera Nikoli? on the recorder. This is a concert all lovers of early music should not miss!

Entry is free but limited seats are available. Enquiries: Issued by: Alet Joubert, Unisa Music Foundation, Tel: 012 429 3336/3311 /  Cell: 084 763 4079. Music Foundation
