The ongoing development of studies in medieval sexuality

Johann Beukes Academic research 2024-01-08

"This article explores the ongoing development of studies in medieval sexuality as a discipline within the broader fields of medieval studies and medievalist studies."

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2024-01-08

Foucault, the “professional historians” and the Middle Ages: Augustine in Histoire de la sexualité 4 (Les aveux de la chair) as case study

Johann Beukes Academic research 2023-06-26

"[A]lthough Foucault’s references to the Middle Ages in this work again played a crucial analogical and indeed rhetorical role in his critique of modernity, he also expanded the existing body of knowledge on the early Middle Ages, and hence contributed to medieval studies as such."

Foucault, die "beroepshistorici" en die Middeleeue: Augustinus in Histoire de la sexualité 4 (Les aveux de la chair) as gevallestudie

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2023-06-26

Martin Versfeld’s (1909–1995) interpretation and application of medieval philosophy at the University of Cape Town (1937–1972) – Part 1

Johann Beukes Academic research 2022-10-27

"This two-part article explores South African philosopher Martin (Marthinus) Versfeld’s (1909–1995) interpretation (shown to belong within the discipline of the history of ideas) and application (indicated as modern-critical) of medieval philosophy during his uninterrupted career as a lecturer and professor of philosophy at the University of Cape Town (UCT) from 1937 to 1972."

Martin Versfeld’s (1909–1995) interpretation and application of medieval philosophy at the University of Cape Town (1937–1972) – Part 2

Johann Beukes Academic research 2022-10-27

"By analysing his writings on medieval philosophy for the period 1937 to 1972 according to these criteria it is shown that although Versfeld’s work in several other philosophical disciplines could on justifiable grounds be considered profoundly original, this is not the case regarding his interpretation of the intellectual Middle Ages."

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2022-10-27

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2022-10-27

The historical development of monasticism in the medieval Latin West, synthesised from the most recent literature

Johann Beukes Academic research 2022-06-15

"This article provides a systematic and coherent overview of the historical development of monasticism in the medieval Latin West (early fifth to the second half of the 15th century) by synthesising the most recent (2001–2021) specialist outputs in all relevant sections."

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2022-06-15

The fragmentation of the body in central-Medieval female mysticism

Johann Beukes Academic research 2021-07-06

"Juxtaposing relevant passages in the mystical works of several female mystics from the 12th and 13th centuries, bodily fragmentation is described as an innovative form of gender subjectivity, produced by the instigation of female sexual desire within a radically spiritualised context and culturally mediated by the cosmological and medical conventions of the time."

Liggaamsfragmentering in sentraal-Middeleeuse vroulike mistiek

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2021-07-06

Foucault’s unique Orientalism

Johann Beukes Academic research 2021-04-23

"Perhaps the humbling lesson to be learned from both Foucault’s unique Orientalism and his problematic expedition to Iran in 1978 could be that 'intellectuals' have to be silent sometimes, in order to learn to speak."

Foucault se unieke Oriëntalisme

Johann Beukes LitNet Akademies (Geesteswetenskappe) 2021-04-23
