Hendrik Christo Viljoen was born on 31 August 1937 in Graaff-Reinet, Cape, where he matriculated from the Hoër Volkskool in 1954. He studied at Stellenbosch University where he obtained his bachelor's, masters and Ph.D. (Ing) degrees in electronic engineering. He continued his studies in England (1960-61) and worked as engineer in the (then) Department of Posts and Telegraphs in Pretoria (1962-65).
He was appointed as Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in 1966, and was promoted to professor in 1970. He was appointed as Dean of Engineering (1979-93) and Vice-Rector (Operations) from 1993 until his retirement in 1998. He subsequently established the Office for Intellectual Property at Stellenbosch University , from which he retired as Director in 2002, and acted as Managing Director of the Unistel Group of Companies.
In March 2006 he was elected a member of Stellenbosch University Council.
Christo Viljoen is married to Hana (née Stehlik) and they have two daughters, Marenka and Annakie and a son, Francois.
