Art song recital at Unisa on 15 April

A vocal recital by soprano Alma Oosthuizen is taking place at Unisa in the Enoch Sontonga Hall on the Sunnyside Campus on Sunday, 15 April at 16:00.

She will be accompanied by the brilliant pianist Malcolm Nay in a varied programme consisting of songs from the 18th century to the 21st century.

The art song, perhaps one of the most intimate of classical music genres, is usually not part of a staged work such as an opera or a musical but intended for performance as part of a recital or other relatively formal social occasion.

The settings of lyric poetry contribute to the appeal of this art form, since the beauty of the poems is enhanced by the music.

In this wide-ranging recital, poems set to music by, among others, German poets Adelbert van Chamissom, Hermann von Lingg, Heinrich Heine and Robert Reinick are represented,

Ms Oosthuizen will be singing songs by Scarlatti, Handel, Schubert, Schumann and Fauré as well as four songs by the Spaniard Fernando Obradors from his Classic Spanish Songs, published in four volumes in 1920.

The programme will be concluded by two cabaret songs by the British composer Benjamin Britten and two African-American Spirituals.

Ms Oosthuizen is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, the Tshwane University of Technology and was a pupil at the Pro Arte School in Pretoria.

She was a prize winner at the Unisa International Singing Competition and has obtained the Unisa Concert Diploma.

She lectured consecutively at Wits and at the University of the Northwest in Potchefstroom for twelve years and started her own singing studio in George in June 2004 where she is still teaching.

Pianist Malcolm Nay, who lectures at the University of the Witwatersrand, has accompanied  Alma Oosthuizen on various previous occasions.

Tickets for this concert are sold only at the door at R85 for adults and R65 for students and pensioners.
