A scene from the 2011 Rostrum Roulette Festival

The Rostrum Roulette Festival hits the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) from 19 – 22 June. The festival's marketing manager, Pieter Jonker, tells Steyn du Toit what the 26 chosen productions for this year is.

What is the Rostrum Roulette Festival?

The Rostrum Roulette Festival is a practical evaluation of both 3rd-year applied directing and BTech arts administration. Each 3rd-year directing student gets the opportunity to direct a 15-minute excerpt/abstract/adaptation of a published play of his/her choice, on which they get marked. They make use of drama students of the Department. However, the schedule for the evaluation showings, as well as venue management, safety, ticket sales and any other organisation of the festival are handled by the BTech drama students. This gives all the students the opportunity to participate in a practical mini-festival.

Why that specific name?

The name Rostrum Roulette was derived from the Rostrum Theatre, which is the experimental theatre on TUT's Arts Campus. The “roulette” part comes from the quick succession of the plays during the run of the festival.

What is this year's theme?

The theme is the Mardi Gras. Due to the wide variety of shows being directed this year, we have decided to give the festival a rather broad theme.
