Young violinist and violist Yura Lee, winner of the 5th Unisa International String Competition, will perform at Unisa on Monday 18 November as part of her national prize winner’s concert tour.
Accompanist Tertia Visser-Downie, who also accompanied her during the competition, will join her on stage in the Enoch Sontonga Hall on Unisa’s Sunnyside Campus. The concert starts at 19:30.
The concert tour, which began on 7 November with a performance with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, will consist of recitals in all the main cities and three additional performances with orchestras: The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra with Adrian Prabava on the podium on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 November, and with the Free State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bernhardt Gueller on Saturday 16 November. She will be playing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto Op. 64 in E minor with both orchestras.
Yura Lee’s recital programme consists of a demanding but popular violin repertoire: the Sonata in D major, Op 12 by Beethoven, Brahms’ third violin sonata, three pieces by Kreisler and Tchaikovsky’s Waltz-Scherzo.
Ms Lee’s career has blossomed since she has won the violin category of the Unisa competition, sponsored by Vodacom, in February 2010.
This year she has won the prestigious ARD Competition in Germany and the Yuri Bashmet International Competition in Russia.
She studied at the Juilliard School (New York City), New England Conservatory (Boston), Salzburg Mozarteum (Austria), and at the Kronberg Academy (Germany).
As a soloist, she has appeared with many major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Symphonieorchester, Monte Carlo Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Tokyo Philharmonic.
Ms Lee has performed with famous conductors Christophe Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Myung-Whun Chung, among many others.
Tickets for the Unisa concert are sold only at the door at R90 for adults and R70 for students and pensioners. Enquiries about the tour may be directed to Louis Fouché at 082 080 2815.
