Asara Wines on the Taste of Cape Town Festival

  • 1

Taste Festivals are global events at which the host city's most acclaimed restaurants and chefs gather to present their signature dishes. Wine farms also take part to showcase their wines. Food and wine are paired in order for visitors to sample unique taste combinations. Fourteen Taste Festivals are hosted around the world: in Amsterdam, Auckland, Cape Town, Dubai, Dublin, Durban, Helsinki, Johannesburg, London, Melbourne, Milan, Mumbai, Rome and Sydney.

Pete Gottgens answered Naomi Meyer's questions about Asara wine farm's involvement with the South African Taste Festivals this year.

Thanks for your time to answer my questions about Asara at the Taste of
Cape Town Festival 2013. Is this your first time at the festival or have you
been part of the festival before? Please tell our readers why you
decided to take part in Taste of Cape Town this year.

It's the first year that we are taking part. We are relaunching our new wine range and decided that Taste of Cape Town is the perfect platform to introduce our wines to the public, as it’s all about experiencing food, wine and interesting flavours. It is also an opportunity to show people that Asara is fun and accessible and offers value for money.

I see that some new wines will be released from your Vineyard and
Specialty ranges this year. Please tell us about your new releases
and what they can look forward to.

Asara's new wine range includes the Classic as well as our Vineyard Collection and Speciality range, as you’ve mentioned.

Asara’s Specialty range is an eclectic collection of wines that represent a twist on regional specialities. It is niche and unique and reflects the quality of an estate whose vinous history dates back to 1691.

Our Vineyard range is a collection of our wines suitable for any occasion and represents the best of each cultivar. It stays true to vineyard of origin by means of minimal cellar handling.

Although we would like guests to experience and taste as much as possible there are a few unique wines to look forward to, such as our White Cab – a white red wine, and also the Asara Nouveau, which is the first red wine of the year to be registered and marks harvest 2013. Asara is the only producer of Nouveau in South Africa.

Would you also like to tell us about your food and wine combinations this
year at the festival? You promise some sweet and savoury tastes outside of the norm – please do elaborate.

A few of our Vineyard and Speciality wines have been selected and are paired with gourmet burgers or macaroons and chocolates.

The variety of gourmet burgers, wrapped to enjoy on the go, will be available in exciting flavours ranging from caviar to marinated chicken with coriander, lemon, ginger and a hint of chilli; foie gras and sundried tomato; as well as mushroom and truffle.

Mouth-watering macaroons and handmade chocolates will keep guests coming back for more as they will be able to indulge in delectable combinations such as passion fruit and mint ganache macaroons with white chocolate; bacon and egg macaroons with a condensed milk chocolate; mixed berry macaroons with praline chocolate; pink peppercorn macaroons with a salted caramel chocolate; or the lavender and liquorice macaroon paired with the classic chocolate truffle.

Where can we find your stall at the festival this year?

Look out for the Asara Bistro Box, right in the centre of the show next to the cricket pitch.

Please share some practicalities, since we are all so precious about our money
in 2013. How much is the entrance fee, what do we have to pay at your bistro
box and is it value for money?

Entrance fee to Taste of Cape Town is R100 and includes a tasting glass. More details on their website.

To try our unique combinations you will need five crowns for wine and a burger (R25), or four crowns for wine, macaroon and chocolate (R20). You will also be able to buy just wine, a burger or macaroon and chocolate.

Tell us what you thought about our combinations afterwards on Facebook or Twitter (AsaraEstate) - we would love to hear from you.

Asara will also take part in Taste of Johannesburg and the Taste of Durban later this year.

See Taste Festivals SA for details of the upcoming Taste Festivals in your area this year.
