Woza!

Woza, woza
Shosholoza
Zulu, English, Dutch and Xhosa
Everybody, beat the drum
See how loud it's calling
Come

Beat your foot upon the earth
Shake it to a rhythmic birth
Pulse by pulse and throb by throb
hear the deep ecstatic sob
torn from throats convulsed with joy
Man and woman, girl and boy
Arms and legs in waves of heat
squirming with the bongo beat

Drum and limbs are intertwined
twisting, writhing, deaf and blind
to all except the cosmic dance
Bodies trapped inside the trance
of the beat, the throb, the shiver
in a transcendental quiver

Black and purple, white and green
beige and brown, and every sheen
melt into each other's veins
Dance each other's joys and pains
brother-blood, arterial, bright
rainbow-colouring the night

Africa, your drum is earth
Your wisdom turns all tears to mirth
Kill the pain, be energetic
Rhythm is your anaesthetic

Toyi-toyi, stomp and leap
better by far to dance than weep
Woza, woza
Shosholoza
Zulu, English, Dutch and Xhosa
Join us on the choo-choo train
beat the drum and shed your brain
