“Sanlam se besigheid is toekomsbeplanning.

Alive Again was sparked by a three-minute-long film, Never Give Up, which the author saw at the 2012 Ubuntu Teen Film Festival in Cape Town.

This contemporary youth novel, written in a first person retrospective narrative style, shares with the reader the story of the highly intelligent and very beautiful Nandile Dube, who – from an early age – hopes to be an “honest human rights lawyer to make sure helpless people get treated fairly and with respect”. Her long-suffering mother fully supports Nandi’s dream, to the extent of working double shifts to pay Nandi’s school fees at a former Model C school. Mrs Dube constantly encourages Nandi to make use of every chance to attain her dream. Nandi’s father, however, holds the patriarchal view that education is wasted on a girl and that women serve no other purpose in society than “to cook, clean, please their husbands” and bear children. The stage is then set for a story that grips the reader from the very first paragraph. Will the courageous Nandi and her support team of “Earth Angels” help her to hold on to her dream of becoming a lawyer, or will her sexist father and his ilk trample on Nandi and disrespect her dreams?

Years of raising two daughters as a single mother has given this author a special interest in the world of the youth. Her own process of coming to terms with divorce gave her insight into the importance of support during emotional crisis periods. With this in mind, she wrote Alive Again with a keen spirit of sensitivity to the challenges which the main characters face.

Silwer – Adeline Radloff vir Chain Reaction

This book will have two front covers when printed. The book is therefore divided into two parts – either of which can be read first.

It tells of the experiences of bully Stephanie Adolphus, the beautiful Krystle Thomas whose home life holds a shameful secret in her mother’s addictive behaviour, Lisakhanya, a girl from the township attending the school on a scholarship, Krystle’s sister who is trying to make any sense of her life and the changes her sister is going through, Dillan, Stephanie’s bullied little brother, and Ben who lives with his overbearing abusive stepfather and terrified mother. Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view. In the end, one character’s decision to do something differently, impacts on all the character’s lives. Essentially it’s a book that deals with the issues of bullying, the notion that true beauty is a blessing not a curse, the complexities of young love, and fear of abuse.

Goud – Tsireledzo Mushoma vir Vhusiku vhutswu (Tshivenda)

Title English translation: Darkest Night

The story is set in a rural village. It is about a sixteen-year-old school girl, Vusani Kwinda, who goes missing and is later found dead in a field. She was killed by her teacher who didn't want people to know he impregnated her. This teacher preys on poor young girls in the community by luring them with gifts and his wealthier lifestyle. His actions are motivated by his belief that he is avenging his wife, who was forced into an affair with her teacher years ago that ended tragically. The girls he preys on fall for his charms and don't see the hatred and the darkness in his motives until it’s too late.

The story reads like a murder mystery and is filled with suspense. The story also touches on important issues like rape, especially in the form of older men taking advantage of young girls from poor backgrounds. We also see instances of xenophobia when a Somalian shopkeeper, Mr Ibrahim, is suspected of murdering Vusani and the community vandalises his store.

Silwer – Sipho R Kekezwa vir Ndizigwaze ngowam! (isiXhosa)

Title English translation: I have stabbed myself with my own spear

The story centers around two teenage boys who are best friends, Xola and Ndoda.  Xola is still at school, repeating Grade 11 and Ndoda dropped out of school in Grade 10.

Xola’s mother died when he was very young and he is being raised by his loving but poor grandmother. They struggle and there are days when they go to bed without food.  Xola’s education is very important to his grandmother and she encourages him to focus on school.

Ndoda, on the other hand, has an easier life. His father died in a car accident when he was ten but left Ndoda and his mother with enough money to get by. Ndoda is spoiled by his mother and grows up to become a problem child who is always coming up with schemes to get quick money and cause as much trouble as he can – his excuse being that he can’t get a job.

The story plays out in an unnamed township in Cape Town to illustrate the shared struggles of all the townships in the city with poverty, unemployment, alcohol and crime. The story also ventures out to the Bellville and Claremont areas. It is a coming-of-age story that focuses on the clever and outright dastardly scams the boys use to rob people of their money and how it all eventually catches up with them. The story also looks at African belief systems and superstitions that the two boys take advantage of when they scam their victims.
