Due to growing student numbers we will be requiring an additional (third) South African lecturer in the Department of Dutch and South African Studies. Appointment will be from October 2012.
We are seeking expertise in the area of South African Cultural Studies with the primary focus on African cultures and languages, and including knowledge of Afrikaans, South African English, and South African literatures.
Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of an African language or languages.
1) BACKGROUND TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN SPECIALISATION
South African Studies at the School of English (IFA) at Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna? has grown steadily since its inception in the 1990s. An introductory course in Afrikaans was first offered as part of the English Studies programme. Currently the Department of Dutch and South African Studies offers independent degrees and has the primary responsibility for curriculum planning, teaching and academic research in this field of study.
The South African specialization resides within the new Faculty of English, created in 2012 to accommodate the large numbers of students and staff and the variety of research interests and departments in the School of English. In 2011 the South African Specialisation achieved the status of a separate philology – filologia po?udniowoafryka?ska, which means South African Philology, or South African Studies. The three-year Bachelor’s degree we offer provides our students with a quality education and gives them the opportunity to receive a degree in English Philology with specialisation in South African Studies. In fact, the curriculum consists of three parts: an English, South African and general component, which all complement one another.
The first component consists of the following: English Language Acquisition, History of England and the USA, History of English and American Literature, History of English, etc.
The South African component includes -- in addition to language acquisition and literature studies -- geographical, historical and socio-political aspects. The focus within South African studies is mainly on the study of cultural phenomena. In other words, the South African reality serves as microcosm for the study of various dimensions of a multicultural world. Much attention is also given to interesting resemblances between Poland and South Africa, especially since the transformations of the nineties.
The following subjects form part of the South African specialisation: History of South Africa, South African Varieties of English, English-language South African Literature, South African Cultural Studies (including an introductory course in an African language or languages, geography, customs, religions, name changes, language policies, oral literature etc.), History of Afrikaans, Afrikaans Language Acquisition, and History of Afrikaans Literature. The other subjects are: Descriptive Grammar (Afrikaans and English), Contrastive Grammar (Afrikaans, English and Polish), Philosophy, Latin, Computer Technology, Introduction to Grammar and Introduction to Literature.
2) REQUIREMENTS
- a doctorate for appointment as Senior Lecturer/Professor
- an MA degree for appointment as Lecturer
- an established record of publication in relevant areas of interest
- experience in teaching at university level
- bilingual (Afrikaans and English)
- knowledge of South African languages other than English and Afrikaans
- excellent interpersonal skills and a team player
- must be committed and willing to spend a reasonable amount of time (at least two years) at UAM.
3) RESPONSIBILITIES
- teaching undergraduates in the BA Specialisation (South African Studies)
- contributing to the department’s research and publication output
- editorial work for the department’s academic journal (Werkwinkel)
- development of the South African specialisation at UAM
- administrative duties.

Toenemende studentegetalle het die behoefte laat ontstaan vir ’n addisionele (derde) dosent in die Departement van Nederlandse en Suid-Afrikaanse Studies. Die aanstelling sal vanaf Oktober 2012 wees.
Ons is op soek na kundigheid op die gebied van Suid-Afrikaanse Studies met die primêre fokus op Afrikatale en -kulture, en daarby kennis van Afrikaans, Suid-Afrikaanse Engels, en Suid-Afrikaanse letterkundes.
Voorkeur sal gegee word aan kandidate met kennis van ’n Afrikataal of -tale.
1) AGTERGROND VAN DIE SUID-AFRIKAANSE SPESIALISASIE
Sedert die beginjare in die 1990’s groei Suid-Afrikaanse Studies by die Skool vir Engels (IFA) aan Adam Mickiewicz-Universiteit in Pozna? bestendig. ’n Inleidende seminarium in Afrikaans is destyds aangebied as deel van Engelse Studies. Vandag bied die Departement van Nederlandse en Suid-Afrikaanse Studies onafhanklike graadprogramme aan en dra self die primêre verantwoordelikheid vir die ontwikkeling van wetenskaplike navorsing in die studieveld en didaktiese take rakende die bestuur van die kurrikulum.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse spesialisasie vorm deel van die nuwe Fakulteit Engels, in 2012 geskep om die groot getal studente en personeel, sowel as ’n verskeidenheid departemente en navorsingsrigtings, te huisves. Die kurrikulum van Suid-Afrikaanse Studies maak dus deel uit van die Engelse Filologie, maar het in 2011 die status van ’n aparte filologie ontvang – filologia po?udniowoafryka?ska, wat beteken Suid-Afrikaanse Filologie, of kortweg Suid-Afrikaanse Studies. Die 3-jaar-BA-kursus gee aan ons studente die geleentheid om ’n graad in Engelse Filologie met spesialisasie in Suid-Afrikaanse Studies te ontvang. Die kurrikulum bestaan in der waarheid uit drie dele: ’n Engelse, ’n Suid-Afrikaanse en ’n algemene komponent, wat almal mekaar aanvul.
Die eerste komponent bestaan uit: Engelse Taalverwerwing, Geskiedenis van Engeland en die VSA, Geskiedenis van Engels en Amerikaanse Letterkunde, Geskiedenis van Engels, ens.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse komponent sluit, benewens taalverwerwing en letterkunde, geografiese, historiese en sosiopolitieke aspekte in. Die fokus in Suid-Afrikaanse Studies is hoofsaaklik op die studie van kultuurverskynsels. Die Suid-Afrikaanse werklikheid dien dus as ’n mikrokosmos vir studente om verskeie dimensies van ’n multikulturele wêreld te leer ken. Baie aandag word bestee aan die interessante ooreenkomste tussen Pole en Suid-Afrika, veral sedert die omwentelinge van die negentigs.
Die volgende vakke word as deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse spesialisasie aangebied: Geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika, Suid-Afrikaanse Variëteite van Engels, Engelstalige Suid-Afrikaanse letterkunde, Suid-Afrikaanse Kultuurstudies (insluitend 'n inleidende kursus in ’n Afrikataal of -tale, aardrykskunde, gebruike, gelowe, naamveranderings, taalbeleide, mondelinge letterkunde ens.), Geskiedenis van Afrikaans, Afrikaanse Taalverwerwing, en Geskiedenis van Afrikaanse Letterkunde. Die ander vakke is: Deskriptiewe Grammatika (Afrikaans en Engels), Kontrastiewe Grammatika (Afrikaans, Engels en Pools), Filosofie, Latyn, Rekenaartegnologie, Inleiding tot Grammatika en Inleiding tot Letterkunde.

- uitstekende interpersoonlike vaardighede en spanwerk
- moet toegewyd en bereid wees om ’n redelike tydperk (minstens twee jaar) by UAM deur te bring.
3) VERANTWOORDELIKHEDE
- onderrig van voorgraadse studente in die BA Spesialisasie (Suid-Afrikaanse Studies)
- bydrae lewer tot die departement se navorsing- en publikasie-uitsette
- redaksionele werk vir die departement se akademiese tydskrif (Werkwinkel)
- ontwikkeling van die Suid-Afrikaanse spesialisasie by UAM
- administratiewe pligte.
