"The Phoenix" by Tsholofelo Mpuru

The Phoenix

he’s a knight in shining armour as they say
but he steals the very soul from her chest
the light in her eyes is gone all you see is doubt
and that was about the time that he left

to him it’s all a game; one more to conquer
to her it was the straw that broke the back
it reminded her of a fact that she’d tried to keep buried (that she’d tried to forget)
she wasn’t good enough with all that she lacked

and yet she rises from the ashes like the phoenix
and yet she rises; there is a life left unfinished
and if she closes her eyes she can see it
and if she shuts the voices out she can hear
‘cos love was all that he ever demanded (wanted) from her
the rest was all an attempt to get near

she wakes up at 5 in the morning
to put on the mask for the day
make sure it’s covered – the darkness within
then gets up and goes on her way

she’s fighting the demons on her own
tired and exhausted from the war
but she keeps it all hidden lest they all see
she has yet to figure out what it’s for

and yet she rises from the ashes like the phoenix
and yet she rises; there is a life left unfinished
and if she closes her eyes she can see it
and if she shuts the voices out she can hear
‘cos love was all that he ever demanded (wanted) from her
the rest was all an attempt to get near

and then He comes and lifts her up
He tells her that He is the One
“I’m preparing a place in my Father’s estate
and one day for you I will come”

she clutches to pain like a handbag
she’s put up the walls to secure
her heart’s been broken; tattered and torn
she’s trying to figure out what it’s for

and yet she rises from the ashes like the phoenix
and yet she rises; there is a life left unfinished
and if she closes her eyes she can see Him
and if she shuts the voices out she can hear
‘cos love was all that He ever demanded (wanted) from her
the rest was all an attempt to get near

so she rises
yes she rises
she’s figured out what life is for
so she rises
yes she rises
love is what life is for

He holds out His hand with the nail scars
she clutches it tight in her own
no matter what happens from this day on
she knows that in Him she’s found home

yes she knows that in Him she’s found home
Jesus, Lord – you’re my home.
