If there’s one thing this series does well, it’s delivering imaginative, high-energy storytelling. And Mission madness takes this to another level.

In this final instalment, Thabo is once again drawn into an unexpected mission: saving Earth from a hostile alien threat. Armed with his relatable “Why me?” attitude, the support of his loyal friends, and even his pet chicken, Thabo embarks on a high-stakes quest to prevent disaster. Thabo remains a highly relatable protagonist: dramatic, reluctant and constantly questioning why he has been chosen, which adds to his appeal. The friendships at the centre of the story ground the narrative and give it emotional warmth.

I loved how seamlessly the story blends humour, adventure and creativity. While the stakes are higher and the danger more pronounced, the narrative maintains its light, quirky tone throughout. The pacing is brisk, and the humour makes the story especially engaging for younger readers.

The story also highlights themes of courage, responsibility and teamwork, making it both entertaining and meaningful. As a work of children’s literature, it succeeds in drawing readers in through accessible language and an imaginative plot, while still offering substance. The inclusion of local lingo and familiar expressions adds an authentic South African flavour, further enhancing its relatability for local readers.

Why it works:

  • Engaging and accessible for younger readers
  • A strong balance of humour and adventure
  • Imaginative sci-fi elements
  • A distinctive local voice that adds charm and relatability

My 10-year-old’s verdict:

I liked this story because it is very funny and I laughed a lot. Thabo is my favourite character because he is the one who has to save the world. There are so many funny moments. Thabo is so funny when he says, “Why me?” I also like Thabo because he is a gamer. I liked Thabo’s pet chicken, Gany, and how he shows up unexpectedly to help him. I love stories about space and aliens; they are so much fun and Thabo gets to fly in a rocket!

Final thoughts

This is an entertaining and lively conclusion to the series. It captures the joy of reading through humour, adventure and a sense of the unexpected, making it a strong choice for young readers, particularly those who enjoy imaginative, fast-paced stories.
