Roald Dahl, ’n storieverteller

The writing is poor, the fantasy is unbelievable and the plot is badly worked out" (bron hieronder, p 444).

Donald Sturrock se boek, Storyteller: The Life of Roald Dahl (London: HarperPress, 2011, 655p), is sy eerste poging in biografiese werk. Vandaar bv The BFG, the Big Friendly Giant.

"He valued clarity and simplicity of expression" (p 272). "The melodrama, the simple vocabulary, the rhythmic repetition that is almost poetic, the precise yet mystical evocation of place and mood, and the sharp articulation of finely nuanced human feelings were all classic early Dahl ingredients. Most arresting perhaps is that lurking sense of the magical" (p 199).

I merely make the truth a little more interesting ... I don’t break my word - I merely bend it slightly" (p vii). "Invention, he declared, was always more interesting than reality" (p 2). Vir die biograaf "his tendencies to exaggeration, irony, self-righteousness, and self-dramatization made him a particularly slippery quarry" (p 12). Dahl het ’n "complex and extravagant personality" gehad (p 10).

Sy uitgewer het hom as "the Master of the Macabre" bemark (p 5). By Dahl was daar ’n "instinctive dislike of anything that smacked of bourgeois good taste" (p 105). HE Bates het Dahl beskyf as "a humorist, whose prime speciality is the macabre. Many of his subjects are quite revolting, some are merely diabolically ingenious, others just plain nasty; but nearly all are very funny" (p 379). "Bad children would get mashed, stretched, transformed into a giant blueberries or boiled into fudge if they stepped out of line in his inventing rooms" (p 395).

In die jare tagtig was Dahl volgens Sturrock "the most famous and successful living children’s writer" (p 3). "In many instances his books are a kind of imaginative survival manual for children about how to deal with the adult world around them. They offer the vision of an existence freed from parental controls, a world full of imagination and pleasure, where everything is possible. Escapist perhaps, but not sentimental. For Dahl always remembered that children were programmed to be survivors" (p 42). Kinderbibliotekarisse was geneig om skepties oor die heilsaamheid van sy boodskappe te wees: "His taste and choice of language leave something to be desired" (p 408). Dahl: "To hell with the spinster librarians ... The louder they shout, the better the book does" (p 524).

In die voorwoord skryf Sturrock samevattend soos volg oor Dahl: "The wild fantasist vied with the cool observer, the vainglorious boaster with the reclusive orchid breeder, the brash public schoolboy with the vulnerable foreigner, who never quite fit into the English establishment although he liked to describe himself as ’very English ... very English indeed’. A delight in simple pleasures - gardening, bird-watching, playing snooker and golf - counterbalanced a fascination for the sophisticated environment of grand hotels, wealthy resorts and elegant casinos. His taste in paintings, furniture, books and music was refined and subtle, yet he was also profoundly anti-intellectual. He could be a bully, yet prided himself on defending the underdog. For one who always relished a viewpoint that was clear-cut, these incongruities were not entirely unexpected. With Roald there were seldom shades of grey. I was also to learn that, as he rewrote his manuscripts, so too he rewrote his own history, preferring only to reveal his private life when it was quasi-fictionalized and therefore something over which he could exert a degree of control. Many things about his past made him feel uncomfortable and storytelling gave him power over that vulnerability" (p 11).

"Roald was named after the Norwegian explorer Amundsen" (p 35). "He lacked a certain literary sophistication" (p 269). "Dahl rarely reviewed the works of others or contributed to literary debate" (p 270).

Hy was "unpredicable ... indiscreet ... argumentative and dogmatic" (p 134). "His sense of embarrassment - already minimal - was further diminished, his sense of fantasy heightened, while his desire to shock became even more pronounced" (p 136). Oor vlieg sou hy voortaan slegs kon skryf. "This claustrophobic, dark writing hut itself became a surrogate cockpit" (p 154); ’n hut want "he found it almost impossible to write with anyone else in the house" (p 220).

"Berlin described Dahl as ’extremely conceited’, and recalled him striding around the embassy apparently with visions of himself as ’a creative artist of the highest order, and therefore entitled to respect and very special treatment’" (p 186). Sy het haarself as "no homemaker and no mother" beskryf (p 422) en van Dahl gesê: "Although life was a two-lane street, he had the right of way" (p 482).

’n Suid-Afrikaner wat ’n kok in die Dahl-huishouding was, is deur Dahl uitgekryt as "a privileged and exploitative white settler" (p 484). Tog het hy gedink daar is "a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke a certain animosity, maybe it’s a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews ... Even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason" (p 511). In 1981 stel Knopf, die uitgewery wat Dahl as outeur bekendgestel het, hom in kennis: "Unless you start acting civilly to us, there is no possibility of our agreeing to publish you. Nor will I - or any of us - answer any future letter that we consider to be as rude as those we’ve been receiving" (p 507-508).

Dahl was ’n mens vir uiterstes: "He dealt with superlatives ... The best, the brightest, the most famous, the richest ... if your star fell out of the constallation ... you quickly became the lowest, meanest, stupidest, vilest of things. He saw things in black and white" (p 543). Well, if you don’t trust Liccy, you can fuck off!" (p 556). Sy heel laaste woorde was: "Ow, fuck!" (p 561).
