5–6  June 2024 | Makhanda

Amazwi South African Museum of Literature invites you to a conference that explores all aspects of children’s literature, from picture books to young adult fiction.

We wish to draw together authors, illustrators, translators, academics, publishers, teachers, librarians, booksellers, reviewers and all organisations and individuals that work to promote or study children’s books, get children reading and get books to children.

Presentations can be academic papers, overviews of work in progress or recently completed, focus on exhibitions, programmes or related projects, book launches or any other format. Multimedia presentations are welcome.

Register to attend the conference here.

Possible themes for papers

Possible topics include but are not limited to: academic papers on particular authors, illustrators, books or themes; multilingualism in children’s books; reading promotion; access to books; storytelling; indigenous knowledge and children’s literature and storytelling; children’s theatre; publishing and bookselling; writing for children; writing by children; presentations of work and working process by authors and illustrators; the role of libraries.

We particularly welcome papers on South African children’s books.

The 2024 conference will be a hybrid event with both online and in-person components.

We strongly encourage presenters to be in person at Amazwi. However, virtual participation will be available through the Zoom platform.
