An interesting lunch hour concert, consisting of Baroque music played by a string ensemble, harpsichord and concert marimba is scheduled for Friday 8 March at 13:00 in the Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at Unisa.
The musicians are Magdalena de Vries (marimba), Denise Sutton (violin), Viara Markova (violin), Elmarie van der Vyfer (viola), Polina Burdokova-Kemp (cello) and Anneke Lamont (continuo).
The programme consists of the Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041 by J S Bach, the Concerto in G major by Telemann and the Concerto in C major, RV443 by Vivaldi.
According to Ms de Vries, who is arguably South Africa’s most well-known marimba player, the concert originated with her love for Baroque music.
Very little transcription of the music was necessary when she started preparations for the event: The Bach and Vivaldi selections are played directly from the original scores. Frank Mallows transcribed the Telemann solo score slightly to make it suitable for a percussion instrument.
The concert will also feature Unisa’s precious Booth harpsichord, played by Anneke Lamont.
Entry is free but limited seats are available.
