Mad monkey and the wildfire is an engaging and meaningful adventure that introduces young readers to the challenges wildlife face when their homes are threatened by natural disasters, such as wildfires. When a devastating wildfire destroys the forest that Madison Monkey and his troop call home, they are forced to leave everything behind and search for safety and food. Along the way, they encounter uncertainty, danger and unexpected challenges. Mad must rely on his courage, his quick thinking and the support of those around him – including his loyal human friend, David – to save his troop.

I thoroughly enjoyed following Mad and his troop on their journey. The story is filled with exciting moments, but it also takes time to explore the emotional impact of losing a home and being forced into unfamiliar surroundings. Mad is a lovable and relatable character whose bravery and determination make him easy to root for, and I found myself eager to see how his adventure would unfold.

Reading this book made me reflect on something I don't often think about: what happens to animals when wildfires destroy their habitats or when human development pushes them further from the places they have always called home. While these are realities many of us are aware of, seeing them through the eyes of Mad Monkey brought a different perspective. It transformed these issues from headlines and statistics into something far more personal and tangible.

The story also gave me a newfound appreciation for the people who work tirelessly in conservation, wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and animal welfare. When disasters strike, they are often the ones helping injured and displaced animals, protecting vulnerable species and working to preserve habitats for future generations. Their dedication is invaluable, and this book serves as a wonderful reminder of the importance of their work. To everyone who spends their days protecting and caring for wildlife: Thank you.

While the story tackles serious themes, it never loses its sense of adventure, friendship and hope. The bond between Mad and David adds warmth to the narrative, and the journey is filled with moments that will keep young readers turning the pages.

My 10-year-old's thoughts:

I liked Mad Monkey because he was very brave. I really like the friendship between Mad and David because whenever Mad needed help, David would come and save him.

I didn't like the witch, because she was scary and very mean to the animals. She locked them up and didn't feed them properly, which made me feel sad for them.

I was very happy when the monkeys got to go home again. They must have been so scared when they saw the fire. When we had fires near our house, I was very scared, too.

I felt sorry for all the animals. I hope all animals can be safe and happy.

Mad Monkey and the wildfire is a heartfelt story about courage, friendship, resilience and the importance of protecting the natural world. It entertains while gently encouraging readers to develop empathy for the animals that share our planet.
