"Kwela" by Minnie Baldwin-Winston

Kwela

The King of the Kwela, a musical fella
invented a rhythm for African hearts
The whistle blew wildly
in time to the foot stomps
and drowned all the colours in sound

CHORUS:
Rhythm unites us all
breaking the colour-wall
Toyi-toyi and tribal feet
stomping on every street

The hands of the white kids
leaned out of the windows
to throw all their pennies
to black dancing feet
Now black, white and brown hands
unite in the power
of Kwela King's sound-crashing beat

CHORUS

So let's all make music
and rock with the rhythm
that joins every finger
of black, brown and white
Our bodies are bongos
of colour explosions
to light up the darkness of night

CHORUS
