Hills and stones

We walk together, our feet matching in rhythm
Our energy meeting the earth beneath our feet
We climb a hill together, our efforts met with a grunt by the world
Sweat the reward for our purpose
Reaching new heights with each step, crushing the impossibilities with our efforts
Yes, we walk in pain, yes, we walk in fear, yes, we walk in chains
But we walk

CHORUS:
We walk (x2)
We take a moment to look back and see how far we have walked
Standing side by side, we look at the hill behind us and the hill before us
We take a moment to look at each other to see how far we need to walk still
And we walk (x2)

Most times we are guided by our instincts
Other times we look at the green of the leaves and the yellow of the rays
We are swayed by the direction of the wind
No compass at hand, no GPS to lead the way
A passing car may mean we are near
The beating of a drum may be the signal that our time is here
But how will we know? Who will tell us? Who will welcome us?
Should we sit down and wait by the way side
or should we follow our feet and keep walking?

CHORUS

The truth is that as we walk this road, we meet different faces
Expressions make us weary, reflections in their eyes leave us questioning each step
We look at down at our feet and realise that we have been walking on soil
that has been walked on by them
Our footprints were separated at times because we had to make way for those between us
those who would not move
We negotiated our directions with the owners of the land we walked on
spent most of our time walking through shadowed spaces
Asking the moon to keep us safe in these places
Stumbled and fell over laid down stones, stones that we could not walk over
We had to let our hands go and roll these stones over
only to realise that these stones were rooted into the ground
Feet aching, hands calloused, bodies perspired in sweat
We walk on

CHORUS

Woman who loves woman, man who loves man
Woman who loves me
Let us walk

CHORUS
