Erica Schoeman is a versatile artist with a more than 30 years record of solo and group exhibitions in South Africa and overseas. With her forthcoming exhibition, “Governing Bodies”, she exhibits three dimensional mixed media works, incorporating objects which pertain to the human body such as medical instruments, zips, x–rays, strips of old leather and others. Many layers of complexity are contained in the human forms. The pertinent question, as indicated in the title “Governing Bodies” is who is in charge of the body. Is it the facade, the outward appearance, or the heart and the brain? The exhibition is structured like a museum, since – to Erica – a museum is a metaphor for the human mind, that living archive of recollections of the past.
Erica Schoeman’s exhibition poses an exciting challenge to the discerning art lover. At the same time, it has a singular appeal also on the visual level.
The exhibition will be opened by Celia de Villiers on Friday 30 March 2012 at 18h30 for 19h00 and runs until Wednesday 18 April 2012. Erica will conduct a walkabout on Saturday 14 April 2012 at 11h00.
