"Dawn" by Chere Guevara

Dawn

I will not be like my father
Neither be like yours
For their lives are stained with hatred
The blood still marks Their hands, their floors

I will not be like my mother
Neither be like yours
For they didn't see the worth of another
When they themselves are flawed

Father, mother can't you see it?
It is different yet you deny
That we can be the same, be equal
So conditioned you don't even try

My skin is no longer black, nor white
I am the colour of my soil
And I can barely sleep at night
For how you made my brothers toil

My blood runs red like yours
My blood runs red like theirs
Why is there still this distance
How can you still not care?

We've all been wronged by evil
But evil has no skin
How can you blame all people
For one’s fault within?

I see the dawn of day
Youth wash the blood from your hands
I am the colour of my soil
I am South African
