Cup O' Thought on Poetry

  • 0

A vibrant new addition to the Durban poetry scene is emerging with The Cup O' Thought poetry sessions which kicked off the year with a rousing launch at the Alliance Francaise in January.  Founded by artistic collaborative project Tea Cup (Tumelo Khoza and Thando Mlambo) the monthly poetry events are proving to be a valuable platform for local and visiting poets. The Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) has indicated it will use Cup O' Thought events to source potential participants for its slam and other programmes during Poetry Africa.

The next Cup O' Thought event will take place as part of the Alliance Francaise FrancoFete day in Sutton Park at 14h30 on Human Rights Day, Wednesday, March 21. The lineup includes The Tribe (a group of DHS performance poets), Phumzile Zondo  (a poet and singer both in isiZulu and English), Keynotez Bazooka and his hip hop outfit, Ground Zhero,  as well as the monthly slam.  Also making an appearance will be poets from the Time of the Writer festival which takes place from March 19 to 24 in Durban.

Time of the Writer presents a Human Rights-tinged World Poetry Day Special in the evening programme at the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre on 21 March. The line-up features award-winning author and poet Chris Abani (Nigeria), the highly-accomplished author of 16 collections of poetry, Kwame Dawes (Ghana/Jamaica), and South Africans David wa Maahlamela and ever-popular Lebo Mashile.
