Clunky bottom cats by Fanie Viljoen is a delightful middle-grade adventure packed with courage, friendship and plenty of feline charm.

At the heart of the story is Champ, the reluctant leader of the Clunky bottom cats. What I loved most was watching him grow throughout the novel. Champ is far from fearless, especially when it comes to the return of his old enemy, Radomir Rat, but he learns that true bravery isn't about being unafraid – it's about doing what’s right even when you’re scared.

The story balances humour and adventure beautifully, while also exploring themes of loyalty, belonging and standing up for those you care about. As the cats face the threat of losing their home, their determination to protect their camp and one another adds genuine heart to the story.

The cast of quirky feline characters kept me entertained, and the cat-themed humour added plenty of fun without taking away from the emotional moments. While aimed at younger readers, the story’s messages about courage, leadership and friendship make it an enjoyable read for all ages.

My 10-year-old's thoughts:

My favourite character was Champ, because he is a hero even when he is scared. He tries to help his friends and save their home. I don't like Radomir Rat, because he is very naughty and he looks scary. I liked all the cat adventures. Cats are so cute and very clever. I like cats. My favourite part was when they helped save the boy and then he liked them afterwards.

The story showed me that I can be brave even when I'm afraid. I'm happy the cats got to stay at the camp.

Final notes: A purr-fectly charming adventure about courage, friendship and finding the bravery to protect what matters most.
