“Before” by Robyn Radcliffe

Before

Before the rise of teenage dreams
When boys were still perceived as foes
Before the blossoming it seems
Of hurt and drama, highs and lows

Before she knew what feelings were
Or felt them biting, deep and real
At the age of nine, that year
Her heart the twelve year old would steal

She did not tell a living soul
Before thoughts of a look or kiss
But put him on a pedestal
To this he was oblivious

He was the first boy that beguiled
That stirred the sense of difference
Between a male and female child
He was her hero, idol, prince

They travelled on the same school bus
Her friend was his best friend’s big bro
So paths would cross, in moments, thus
She wished those times would move so slow

There was a day, reason unknown
He lightly touched her on her hair
Her heart swelled forth, his status grown
A moment that she dared not share

A sweet and secret childhood fate
Of adoration, pure and true
The innocence of that pure state
Before what is ... she just knew you
