"Back at us" by Jonathan Bosman

Back at us

It’s been four whole years,
Since we said good-bye I travelled the world, but
Now I am back, in your world, I saw you today
I hid in the back, I couldn’t go back, couldn’t face it.
So I heard you made it, glad for you,
You got what you wanted, I did too.

Alone now, it is really better
I knew they would tell you, so you heard
That I am here, back in your town
A long history means nothing,
Erase, rewind, fast forward
Let’s just move forward.

Backward, they are backward
Everyone is talking about me, talking about you
I keep saying there were indeed days to remember
But they take years to forget.
Just got the call, unknown number,
I should have known, I probably did know.

Should have put it down, what’s the point now?
Let’s just talk about it I hear
Talk, talk, talk, it will never change
You’re over here with your new life
I am leaving again soon, it really doesn’t matter
And in between it all there is the unmanageable us.

Remember those days, the fights, the tears
The neighbours knocking, both of us running
The fears, the late nights, no conclusions
No resolutions.
It is what it is, it was what it was
Leave it at that, let’s move on.

Cloudy day, airport lounge, good time to leave
The last time I was here you showed up unannounced
Not today, though.
I never told you, but distance actually made it worse
Never mind, it’s okay, last boarding call,
I look back, you’re leaning against that same wall.
