Richard Jurgens

Richard Jurgens is a writer and editor based in Amsterdam. Born in Johannesburg in 1960, he studied philosophy and English at the University of the Witwatersrand. After teaching English in Tanzania, he went to the Netherlands, where he held a Mandela Research Fellowship at the University of Groningen. He was active with a South African cultural organisation in Amsterdam before returning to Johannesburg in 1994, where he worked as a freelance journalist for a range of national newspapers and magazines. His memoir, The Many Houses of Exile, was published in 2000. The following year he returned to Amsterdam, where he became the founding editor of Amsterdam Weekly.
