Ingrid Jonker: ’n biografie, a review essay

Leon de Kock Resensies 2018-06-05

"Reading a biography such as Petrovna Metelerkamp’s Ingrid Jonker: ’n biografie provides a fine example of what I am talking about. This is a nice fat book, chock-full of stories and reported data about the enigma that is Ingrid Jonker. Apart from anything else, it is clear that Metelerkamp’s 437-page tome is the product of many years of unstinting work ..."

Postapartheid as a wound culture within a pathological public sphere: Mark Gevisser’s Lost and Found in Johannesburg

Leon de Kock Academic research 2016-05-11

"To enrich the reflexive play, Gevisser combines this visual evidence with his own, considered interpretation of the various data he offers up for inspection."

Postapartheid as wondkultuur binne ’n patologiese openbare ruimte: Mark Gevisser se Lost and found in Johannesburg

Is Afrikaans Literature a World Literature? New Notes on an Old Field

Jeanne-Marie Jackson, Leon de Kock 2015-04-09 "'A world literature' ... gets us asking a really hard question: What are the standards by which a set group of texts or writers – not the one, but also not the many – can be said to be 'of the world', or of a world standard?"

After Brink

Leon de Kock 2015-02-10 "The question is: Can we gather together such an accumulation of civil dissent again? Surely – if only for André Brink’s sake, and for the memory of his principled refusal – we should decline to sit back and let the thievery pass us by as if it’s just another day, business as usual?"

'n Heteronormatiewe, manlike perspektief

Book extract: Bad Sex (1)

Leon de Kock 2011-11-15 I approach the door of Anna Brink’s rooms in Observatory, Johannesburg, in which her clean-cut therapy chamber is located. I’ve been here before, on a couple of occasions when life – relationships and marriage – got too hot to handle. She knows me well. In fact, she’s like an old friend. I know that, once Anna opens the door, we will go immediately left, into her refuge for the talking wounded.

Book extract: Bad Sex (2)

Leon de Kock 2011-10-11 It was then that I awakened to the fact that Sabina wouldn’t put up with my “poor attitude”.’

‘Right, as you pointed out just now,’ says Anna.
