Leon Claassen is an analyst at Ratings Afrika responsible for municipal governance and sustainability evaluations. He has more than 25 years’ experience in credit analysis and was the Country Head for Moody’s South Africa before developing the Municipal Financial Sustainability Index (MFSI™) for Ratings Afrika.
Previously he was a director and co-founder of CA-Ratings, a local ratings agency which was acquired by Moody’s in 2007. Primary rating responsibilities included municipalities, financial institutions, banks and fund ratings. He also shared responsibility for structured and project finance ratings. Other previous experience includes merchant banking, auditing and teaching.
Leon Claassen is a former Chartered Accountant (SA) with a B Com Honours degree and a Higher Education Diploma.
