Katherine studied fine arts, ceramics and literature and has lived in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, since
she graduated from the university of Natal.
She has exhibited extensively at home and abroad during her 40 years of dedicated creative
practice. She has won many awards in South Africa, and her work has been exhibited extensively
both nationally and internationally. She has work in most South African public collections and also
in the Museum of Art and Design in New York.
Her work has been shown in Taipei, New Zealand, London, Australia and most extensively in new
York. In 2016 she participated in the Central China Ceramic Biennale in Zhenzhou.
A love of light, translucency and vibrational colour inform an ongoing enquiry into her materials and
techniques. Porcelain has remained Katherine’s most constant medium of expression.
While ceramics is associated with functionality and with sculptural form - her work tends to do
neither. She employs the simple vessel form in an almost subversive simplicity, forming it as
receptacle for light, movement and sound.
Her most recent works explore saturated hues suffused into the body of the clay and these small
‘cups of colour’ set sail in conversation with the long admired work of Ben Coutevides.
Belying the complexity of content and her constantly evolving subject matter, her work remains
outwardly simple and finds its forms in stillness and poise. They become the skin of light between
her thoughts, the materials, the movements of making and an expression which resonates beyond
itself.
