Gerhard Marx
Gerhard Marx engages the visual languages of scientific traditions (cartography, botany, etc) and uses acts of dissection and careful reassembly to create drawings, sculptures and performances in which these scientific languages, and the objects that they produce, are rendered subjective. This engagement aims to open a poetic and critical dialogue with the physical object as well as the philosophical and political associations that it (and the tradition from which it was born), carries.
Marx’s work has been shown internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Art Basel, Frieze London, FIAC, Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Basel Miami. His work is included in numerous public and private art collections. His most recent solo exhibitions include Spatial Imaginaries, Propositional Cartographies (Goodman Gallery, London, 2021), Hold this distance close (Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town, 2022) and a solo booth, terraterraterra (Cape Town Art Fair, 2023).

artwords: a word for words – an opening address
2023-09-14"The title of this exhibition – artwords – invites us to consider the meeting of two modalities of representation: the interchange between the visual and the textual, between image and text, between language and object". This is a blog series in dialogue with artwords, a group exhibition on text and art. Written contributions – posted in the forthcoming weeks on this LitNet platform – offer conceptual perspectives on the exhibition, and engage with the process and product of featured artworks. This exhibition opened on 10 September at the Gallery @ Glen Carlou (on the Klapmuts Road). Gerhard Marx delivered the opening address.
