"All that glitters" by William Henry

All that glitters

I met the old man at quayside, a broken guitar at his side
With a worn-out voice he told me his story and these are the things he sang:
Not all that glitters is gold, not all stories are told
Not all the rumours are rumoured, not all the twitters are true
Not all the liars are relied on, not all the spies can be spied on
Not all the words should be written, not all the lovers are smitten
Not all laughing is laughter, not all who weep are weeping
Not all the seers can see, not all the rockers can scream

Chorus

Not all that glitters is gold
Not all the stories are told
Not all the promises grow old
Not all that is offered is sold
Because
Not all that glitters is gold

His eyes were a faded blue but his words were clear and new
And with sigh that escaped his weary body he said there was more to say:
Not all that glitters is gold, not all the promises grow old
Not all the wonders are wonderful, not all the beauty’s beautiful
Not all the truths are truthful, not all the youths are youthful
Not all who survive are survivors, not all the sanity is sane
Not all the poets should rhyme, not all the holy sublime
Not all that is meant has meaning, not all that seems is seemly

Chorus

Not all that glitters is gold
Not all the stories are told
Not all the promises grow old
Not all that is offered is sold
Because
Not all that glitters is gold

I went back to the quayside to find him but he wasn’t there
Except his broken guitar, a worn-out chair and the echo of his words:
Not all that glitters is gold, not all that is offered can be sold
Not all who achieve are achievers, not all who have died should be dead
Not all the pain should be painful, not all the tears are grief
Not all the falling should fall, not all those standing l should stand
Not all we know should be known, not all that is owned should be owned
Not all good things must end, not all good things must end
