Solo recital by Ockie Vermeulen on Grand Rieger organ at Unisa

The popular organist, arranger and producer Ockie Vermeulen will give a solo recital on the magnificent Rieger concert organ at Unisa on Sunday 21 April at 16:00.

Vermeulen, whose debut organ CD ‘Highland Cathedral’ has topped the South African charts for over 50 consecutive weeks, is very active as concert and church organist. He regularly collaborates with other artists.

Vermeulen has also succeeded in making organ music more accessible to the public through his crossover productions.

A recent highlight of his career was an invitation to perform in the St Charles Church in Monaco as part of its 100-year celebration, with Prince Albert and Princess Charlene part of the audience.

The carefully selected programme promises to give admirers of organ music much pleasure and entice new audience members to explore a vast world of organ master pieces.

One of the most famous works in the organ repertoire, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach is first on the programme. It is followed by a Fantasie by Mozart, the Organ Sonata no 2 by Mendelssohn and the French composer Bonnet’s  Concert Variations.

The interesting and influential American composer Philip Glass has composed several works for organ, including a set of five dances. Vermeulen has included the fourth dance in the programme.

Two movements from the majestic Symphony no 5 by Charles-Marie Widor, Adagio and Toccata  will conclude the programme.

Tickets are sold in the foyer of the ZK Matthews Great Hall from 15:00 onwards and cost R90 for adults and R70 for students and pensioners.
