Murder, suicide or assassination? Those are the questions asked in Lan Reid’s book Laugh back the sun which was launched to a lively audience at the Botanical Society book shop at Kirstenbosch recently. The book is about Chris Lessing, who survived World War II as part of Ian Fleming’s crack team only to die the year after on Robben Island, when Lan was only four months old. Lan researched the story after her late mother left her the letters that Chris had written to her during the war. The letters revealed a passionate love story as well as an adventurous spirit not quelled by the rigours of war. Here are two photos of the book launch.
