Towards the end of 2012, Booktown Richmond announced that they would be relaunching the Fugard Festival early in 2013, after ABSA withdrew their sponsorship, thereby forcing Nieu-Bethesda to bring the Fugard Festival to an end. Booktown Richmond is now proud to announce that the 2013 Fugard Festival will be held from 23 to 26 May 2013, in conjunction with the JM Coetzee and Nobel Laureates Festival, in Booktown Richmond. It promises to be a bumper Karoo weekend!
Darryl David, organiser of the Richmond Fugard Festival, says that Ross Devenish, who has worked extensively with Fugard, will open the festival at its new home.
Fugard dramas that will be on show in Richmond include Blood Knot, Marigolds in August and The Guest. Artists who want to be a part of the festival have until 28 February to submit their applications. Kindly direct all queries to Darryl David on 0813918689 / davidd@ukzn.ac.za or Peter Baker on 0829411572 / pcbaker@mweb.co.za. Please note, though, that the Fugard Festival is also open to artists in the genres of music, puppetry and productions of a non-Fugard flavour.
Continuing in the tradition of Nieu-Bethesda, this annual festival plans to remain the biggest Fugard celebration in the world, says David.

Darryl, what happened to your promise to take the Fugard Festival after the first-day opening in Richmond, back to Nieu Bethesda where it belongs?
