In the void of orchestral music in Pretoria, music lovers are in for a treat with a performance of the by die newly formed Unisa Wind Ensemble.

Two orchestral ensembles will perform at Unisa on Sunday 04 May at 16:00 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall. They are the Unisa Wind Ensemble and the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra.

The Unisa Wind Ensemble was established by the Deputy Director of the Unisa Music Foundation, Prof Karendra Devroop 6 months ago and is currently being trained by Prof Devroop and Jaco van Staden. This concert will mark the official inaugural concert of the Unisa Wind Ensemble.

The ensemble consists of enthusiastic and dedicated young musicians from poor communities who now have the opportunity to advance their skills in a stimulating environment. The progress that has been made so far is unbelievable and music lovers can look forward to a delightful concert.

The ensemble consists of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tuba, euphonium, bassoon, bass clarinet, French horn and percussion.

Also on the programme is the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra, which will be conducted by Bryan Schimmel.

This training orchestra has given many excellent concerts at Unisa since its first concert on 3 October 2010. The full size symphony orchestra consists of cadets who play alongside professional musicians. When faced with a professional environment such as this set-up, the young musicians are raised to a higher level and also start to learn essential standard orchestral repertoire.

Repertoire for the concert will include traditional orchestra and wind band literature, American marches and Broadway tunes.

Tickets are sold at the door at R95 for adults and R75 for students and pensioners.
