  • 0

Traditional swing to contemporary jazz to Latin jazz and several original compositions will be featured in a lunch hour concert by the Unisa Jazz Trio on Friday, 19 April at 13:00 in the Dr Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at Unisa.

The Unisa Jazz Trio is comprised of staff members from Unisa and includes Dr. Karendra Devroop (saxophones), Dr. Mageshen Naidoo (guitars) and Prof Marc Duby (bass).

The trio marks a historic and unique collaboration between the Unisa Music Foundation, Directorate Music and Department of Musicology at Unisa.

Well-known South African drummer Godfrey Mgcina, who regularly performs with the group, will join them on stage for this event.

Established in 2013, the trio aims to promote new and original jazz compositions by the ensemble members and to augment the performing ensembles that currently exist at Unisa.

The trio members are well established jazz performers who have worked with some of South Africa’s leading performers and composers.

Individually, the trio members have worked with a host of world renowned jazz musicians and performed at major jazz festivals and conferences on all six continents in several countries.

The ensemble’s repertoire, while steeped in the authentic jazz tradition, attempts to expand the boundaries of South African jazz by including several original compositions by the trio members.

Entry is free but limited seats are available.
