Beethoven’s famous Moonlight Sonata is one of the pieces that Russian-American pianist Konstantin Soukhovetski will perform on Saturday 22 February at 18:00 in the Enoch Sontonga Hall on Unisa’s Sunnyside Campus.

Soukhovetski first performed in South Africa in 2004 when he competed in the 10th Unisa International Piano Competition, for which he received second prize.

His subsequent return visits to South Africa were met with critical acclaim.

The rest of the programme consists of the Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor from Book 1 of Bach’s Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, The hours by Philip Glass, Mozart’s Fantasy in D minor, La Vallee D’Obermann by Liszt, and his own transcription of Cappriccio by Strauss.

His US debut as a composer took place at the New York Winter Salon at the Steinway Hall in December 2007 with a transcription of the last scene from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin for violin and piano as well as the choreographed scene for piano, soprano and the dancer, titled Olympian Dream.

Soukhovetski was born in Moscow into a family of artists and began his music studies at the age of four.

He went to the US in 1999 to study at the celebrated Juilliard School of Music where he received his Artist Diploma, Bachelors of Music and Masters of Music Degrees.

Successes at other competitions include the third prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition and first prize at the New Orleans International Piano Competition.

Tickets for the concert are sold only at the door for R95 (adults) and R75 (students and pensioners).
