I am tired, Beloved,
of chafing my heart against
the want of you;
of squeezing it into little inkdrops,
And posting it.
~Amy Lowell, "The Letter"

Ons gunsteling-liefdesbrief sal ’n eksemplaar van die versameling liefdesbriewe Love Letters of Great Women wen, die boeke Love Letters en Recipe for Love deur Katie Fforde, sowel as Cinema of Obsession: Erotic Fiction and Love Gone Wrong in the Movies en The Great Karoo deur Leon Nell. Die boeke is geskenk deur Exclusive Books.

To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart. ~ Phyllis Theroux

LitNet would like to rekindle the lost art of the love letter in 2012. This is your chance to write a love letter that echoes across the ages to touch hearts today.

The assignment

Imagine that a mailbag full of letters that was missing for years is found in the cellar of a really old post office. Among these undelivered letters to friends, letters to family members and letters to acquaintances there is one letter that moves everyone who reads it. It is a love letter into which someone poured so much fire, passion and longing that it still grips the imagination and makes the reader feel like the only person on earth.

Write that love letter that was found in this bag. You can choose who wrote the letter and to whom. You can pick a date and the circumstances surrounding the lovers' correspondence. Ensure that your letter expresses the unique character of the writing and that we learn something about the lovers' story without your spelling it out.

The rules

Your letter may not be longer than 500 words (ink and paper was expensive back in the day!).

Your letter must reach us by email 8 June, 2012.

Send your entry to [email protected]. Be sure to include your full name and postal address with your entry.

The prizes

Our favourite love letter will win a copy of the collection of love letters entitled Love Letters of Great Women, the books Love Letters and Recipe for Love by Katie Fforde, as well as Cinema of Obsession: Erotic Fiction and Love Gone Wrong in the Movies and The Great Karoo by Leon Nell. The books are donated by Exclusive Books.
