Lize van Robbroeck is an associate professor in visual studies at Stellenbosch University’s visual arts department, and vice-dean, arts. She completed her undergraduate studies and her honours and master’s degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her doctorate at the University of Stellenbosch dealt with the discursive reception of modern black art in white South African writing. She is one of the editors and writers of Visual century, a four-volume revisionist history of South African art in the twentieth century, and is editor-in-chief of the open source journal, Third Text Africa. The bulk of her research focuses on postcoloniality and nationalism in South African visual arts. Recently, her research interests have expanded to include psychoanalytic theories of subjectivity, which she is applying to postcolonial visual culture. She is currently collaborating with scholars from New Zealand, Canada, Australia and the United States on a book on settler colonialism and art history, and is authoring a monograph on whiteness in contemporary South African art.
