Benni Barker

Benni Barker is a qualified teacher (MEd) and remedial therapist. She is retired, but does some private work and some work on request from schools.

She grew up in an Afrikaans farming family in Montagu. She married English-speaking Des Barker, a test pilot and author.

Their home language is English, and while their two sons, Kevin and Dean, were brought up in a bilingual home environment, they basically function as an English family.

Benni’s professional career has been conducted mostly in English, and they have lived abroad for a total of five years.

She loves swimming, spending time with her family, travelling abroad and gardening. Both their boys live and work abroad. They have two cute cats who rule their household.

Writing activities:

  • Educational material developer.
  • Short sketches and stories in Afrikaans, as a challenge to herself – mostly to maintain her Afrikaans language ability, and for her own enjoyment and relaxation; mostly unpublished at this stage.

"Cleo kyk met naguilpupille na haar, haar blou oë groot en wyd in die nag. Sy slaap nie haar katslaap nie. Sy is te bewus van die foltering van gelaaide emosie in die kamer."
