Abri de Swardt
Abri de Swardt was born in Johannesburg in 1988, but has since lived most of his life at the foot of a mountain, in either George or Stellenbosch. Graduating with a BA in visual arts (fine art) cum laude at Stellenbosch University in 2010, he is currently pursuing an honours in Visual Studies at the same institution. He received merit awards at Sasol New Signatures and ABSA L’Atelier in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and was the recipient of the Timo Smuts Prize for top fine art graduate at Stellenbosch University in 2010 and the Rector’s Award for Excellent Achievement in the Arts and Social Sciences in 2011.
This year he has written an essay for the monograph of Pierre Fouché, reviewed Berni Searle’s Shimmer in Art South Africa, done a curatorial internship at Tretchikoff: The People’s Painter, and had his debut solo exhibition, To Walk on Water, at blank projects in Cape Town.
He is still digesting Steve McQueen’s Hunger, and for the past three years he has been wishing that he could have made Olafur Eliasson’s Green River. He dreams of swimming in Jellyfish Lake on Eil Malk Island, Palau, like Dorothy Cross or those forgotten winners in Survivor.
