Lyric writing tips from Louise Carver

Louise

Hi Louise, how are things?

Great thank you and also incredibly challenging, as I am involved in all aspects of my forthcoming album. I am about to fly to Boston to work with US producer, Joe Bemudez. The track that we will be doing will be released in the States but I will be able to license it onto my album.

When did you first start writing lyrics? How do the lyrics you're producing these days differ from those early efforts?

I started to write lyrics from eleven years old. The melodies and lyrics were a lot less complicated but still strangely deep and philosophical. I am now on album number 5 and hope it will be my best one yet. I believe that when you continually hone your craft, surround yourself with gifted people and never allow your ego to dominate your daily thoughts and actions, then you will grow and strengthen in your chosen career.

From your own experience, what advice would you give to young lyric writers trying to find their voice?

Experience life honestly and with a non-judgemental outlook. Be open to new adventures, as this will enrich your writing. Fall in love, fall out of love, but feel everything that comes your way. If you are a natural lyricist, this will be second nature to you.

If you had to brief your fans to write for you, what would you be looking for in lyrics submitted for Sing ‘it that you'd be excited to record in terms of approach, style and content?

The subject matter should try to be universal, as in a common human experience (emotions most people can relate to). The lyrics should be unique and the phrases used should never be rehashed/recycled from other people’s songs. Being a lyricist does not mean you have to be super dark or deep, but it does necessitate knowing yourself and being original in your delivery of words. Equally important is the flow of each lyrical phrase – they should sound smooth and flow off the tongue – don’t try and pack a phrase, as it will become clumsy (unless you are writing a rap that is!).
