THE BIG BOOK TRADE IS JUST around the corner

With Sub-Saharan Africa’s premier book fair just around the corner, expect an impressive line-up that will appeal to trade visitors and exhibitors.

The Cape Town Book Fair caters for all bibliophiles, trade visitors and publishers. There will be over 200 events spanning the three days, including meet the author sessions, panel discussions, literary forums, book launches and symposiums.  For all registered trade visitors, there will be a specific trade day on the 15 June. This marketplace will provide a platform for local and international visitors to network and develop relationships.

Welcoming all trade visitors

The first morning of the Fair has been reserved exclusively for trade visitors, with doors only opening to the public from 14h00 onwards. This is also the only day of the Fair that ends as late as 22h00, giving trade visitors an opportunity to share ideas and trade well into the night.

The trade day has been well received both locally and internationally, and the Cape Town Book Fair is looking forward to welcoming many newcomers and all returning visitors.

Loads to look forward to

The Cape Town Book Fair has secured one of Africa’s most prolific writers, Ngugi wa Thiong’o. He’ll be participating in the opening session and visitors can look forward to a book reading and signing session as well. Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o is a prominent novelist and theorist of post-colonial literature. He’s written numerous books but is most well-known for Decolonising the Mind.

The Van Riebeeck Society will be launching AB Xuma Autobiography and Selected Works at the Fair. This is a compilation of former-ANC leader, Dr. Alfred Bitini Xuma’s correspondence and prose, edited by Peter Limb.

Two books on Jacob Zuma will be launched during the Fair as well. There will also be panel discussions on ANC policies - look out for Susan Booysen, Glenda Daniels and Anthony Butler, who will be leading some of these debates.

Established academic and educational publishers and exhibitors will be returning this year. Favourites such as Wits University Press, Juta & Co, Unisa Press, UCT Press will be launching and selling books as well as hosting some of the debates.

The return of the copyright symposium

The Cape Town Book Fair has announced that the copyright symposium remains a fixed feature in the programme. It is hosted by the Academic and Non-Fiction Authors’ Association of South Africa (ANFASA), together with the Publishers’ Association of South Africa (PASA). This year it will focus on what makes a fair and reasonable publishing contract. ANFASA and PASA have been working on a blue print document on this subject, which they plan on launching at the Fair.
